Extreme heat and intense wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

Intense heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, delivering blazing heat to a broad swath of the region.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to significant transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled.
