The court decision of political dissident and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Rights groups and international powers have called the national security convictions influenced by political considerations.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that the lengthy imprisonment is effectively a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She characterized the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation designed to silence Beijing's detractors. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and free him to his family.
“This ruling demonstrates how the vague and overly broad clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework can be interpreted in contravention of international human rights obligations,” stated UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “condemns” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and demanded his prompt and absolute freedom.
Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was taken into custody four years ago the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was found guilty on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The latter charges were based on the national security statute.
The activist's child, Sebastien, expressed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. The legal team has called him the “world’s highest profile prisoner of conscience” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai said that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, even as it offered some “respite” that the court process had concluded.
The sentencing has complicated the bilateral relationship. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. However, the extent of progress on obtaining his liberty is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the point of enhanced diplomatic ties between the UK and China, stating it felt “rather incongruous.”
Conversely, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”
A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and maintained the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He advised international actors to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.
Press rights groups labeled Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general stated it was a “somber occasion for those who care about a liberty of the press.”
Boasting a close to 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s harsh punishment is seen as the most severe yet imposed under the controversial legislation.
