The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
