Following a decisive victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has substantially closed the gap in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and leading teammate Oscar Piastri, everything is in place for a electrifying three-way championship battle at the renowned Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's Qatar win was anything but predictable. While he delivered a masterful drive for his team, the result was heavily influenced by a costly strategic call from the McLaren team. Choosing to stay on track during an initial safety car period, McLaren inadvertently handed the race lead to their rival, who capitalized impeccably.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm ready to go there and fight for it," Verstappen commented. "My mindset is with just optimism. I'll push to the limit I can but simultaneously, should I fall short, I still know that I had an amazing season."
This philosophy as he puts it alleviates the pressure. The goal for the last race is clear: to maximize everything possible from himself and the RB21.
The remarkable aspect of this late-season charge so impressive is the distance he has recovered. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was an enormous 104 points behind the championship leader his rival and had essentially conceded his title chances.
The shift began with substantial performance updates introduced by his team at the Monza. Adjustments to the vehicle's underbody and aerodynamic package rectified ongoing balance issues, allowing Verstappen to push to the limit with the car once more.
Following those upgrades, his performance has been nothing short of spectacular, racking up five wins and several top-three finishes. He was quick to highlight the unified work behind this resurgence.
"We have triumphed where maybe the odds were against us, by executing the right call as a team," Verstappen added. "My collaboration with my team on the pit wall and the whole team... we are really well integrated."
With the paddock travel to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is crystal clear.
The intensity now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have let a big points cushion slip away due to costly errors, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. In his view, the situation allows for liberation, turning the last event into a straight chance to go for glory with zero pressure.
