So, how did you experience the past year in your home? Did it seem entirely positive as people post on social media? Full of A-grades for your offspring and riotous costume gatherings for the parents? Or was it a sea of frustration with only rare entertaining flotsam? And was any of it actually real, or is everyone now digitally altered virtual entities with unrealistic smiles?
I have gathered the family together, willing or unwilling, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: which video games we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my personal ranking."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can grow up and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and understand it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after family time.
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets each element right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and he is obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I get that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Debate between questionable alliances that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the doorstep at dinner time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or endless scrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
