The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
Given that the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
