England have opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
