Privacy Online is an Illusion’: Australian Teen Indicted Over Supposed Active Shooter False Report in United States

An adolescent from the state of NSW has been formally accused for purportedly placing numerous false reports to first responders – a practice called “swatting calls” – deceptively reporting gun violence incidents were occurring at large commercial and educational institutions across the America.

Cross-Border Inquiry Culminates in Legal Action

Australian authorities laid charges against the young male on December 18th. Officials state he belongs to an alleged decentralised online network of offenders hiding behind anonymous accounts in order to initiate an “urgent and significant police response”.

“Frequently male youths aged from 11 to 25, are engaging in offenses such as swatting, doxxing and computer intrusion to gain status, a reputation and recognition in their internet circles.”

During the case, officers took possession of a number of digital devices and a banned gun located in the teen’s custody. This seizure was conducted under Taskforce Pompilid created in October 2025.

Authorities Deliver a Clear Message

Graeme Marshall, commenting broadly, advised that individuals operating under the illusion they can break the law from behind a computer and encrypted identities should be warned.

Australian police said it initiated its inquiry following information from American law enforcement.

An FBI assistant director, from the International Operations Division, said that the “risky and resource-draining act” of false reports endangered lives and consumed vital first responder resources.

“This investigation proves that secrecy online is an myth,” he stated in a shared press release with the AFP.

He further stated, “We are committed to partnering with international partners, our global allies, and industry experts to find and prosecute those who misuse digital tools to inflict damage to the public.”

“The police's duty (is|remains) to stopping the distress and suffering members of these digital criminal groups are causing to the public, under the mistaken belief they are hidden,” Marshall concluded.
