The daughter of former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked charges at the beginning of her court case in the harbor city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being charged over remarks she published on online platforms four years ago during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.
A week of chaos in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least three hundred dead and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this violence and is charged with allegations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
The unrest were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.
The defendant has always rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier calling the state's evidence as insufficient.
She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her dad after he established his own political party and competed against the African National Congress.
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his relatives.
A few of backers from her party, the political party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has maintained that the testimony presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide compelling evidence for a conviction.
The court case continues as both sides present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a highly monitored judicial process with substantial policy consequences for South Africa.
