A servicemember of the National Guard is showing improvement after he was critically injured in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.
The family of Andrew Wolfe, 24, report "the injury to his head is slowly healing and that he's beginning to 'regain his familiar appearance,'" said the state's chief executive Patrick Morrisey.
The family anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the next two to three weeks, and they feel optimistic about his recovery, said the governor.
The serviceman was one of a pair of state guardsmen shot when a shooter opened fire not far from the presidential residence on November 26th. His colleague, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her wounds.
"We continue to ask all state residents and Americans for their thoughts and prayers!" Morrisey declared.
The governor was present at a vigil on Friday evening for Staff Sgt Wolfe at Musselman High School in his hometown, where the serviceman was once a pupil.
A clergyman at the vigil read a message from the soldier's parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe.
"It is clear to us that there is a difficult journey to go," they wrote, according to regional media Metro News.
"But our faith keeps us hopeful. We remain grateful for the prayers and the encouragement from people all over the world."
Previously, the state official said Staff Sgt Wolfe had responded to a nurse with a positive gesture and was able to move his toes.
Police have formally accused the suspected shooter, an individual from Afghanistan named the suspect, with premeditated homicide and assault with intent to kill.
Before coming to the United States in 2021, he was once a counterterrorism soldier in a CIA-backed unit that worked with American troops in Afghanistan.
The injured airman was one of two thousand militia personnel whom the former president dispatched to the Washington DC in August as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in Democratic-led cities.
In the aftermath of the incident, the former president said he desired an additional five hundred military personnel deployed to the nation's capital.
The Trump administration has also cited the attack as a reason for further restrictive policies.
They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from 19 countries that were part of a travel ban announced over the summer, among them the suspect's home country.
