Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections wrap up.
"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his online platforms and championing a proposition that would increase the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to pull federal funds from the state and warned eliminating the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he said, following a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration noted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding additional funds from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's release countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
A this month's survey found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an typical level of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The thought that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
