Former Physician Accused of Assault Charges Involving 38 Individuals in His Care

Prosecutors report that a former physician has been charged with carrying out assaults against 38 individuals who were under his care.

Details of the Serious Allegations

Nathaniel Spencer from Birmingham faces allegations of dozens of acts of sexual assault – comprising acts against minors under the age of thirteen – spanning the period from 2017 to 2021.

A deputy chief CPS official stated, “Legal teams have diligently worked to assist a detailed and complex police inquiry, carefully reviewing the available evidence to determine that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest.”

The Investigation

The charges follow what investigators called a “detailed inquiry” into reported sexual offences at two hospitals: the Royal Stoke university hospital and a facility in Dudley.

Spencer is scheduled to appear at the local magistrates' court on 20 January.

Prosecutors said the 45 sexual offences he is charged with:

  • 15 counts of sexual assault.
  • Seventeen counts of assault by penetration.
  • 9 counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.
  • Three counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration.
  • One count of attempted penetrative assault.
