Denmark Establishes Special Monitoring System to Observe President Trump After Arctic Row

Taking action reminiscent of TV series guards, the Danish foreign ministry has initiated a night watch team—not guarding against fantasy threats, but to monitor Donald Trump as Denmark sleeps.

This night watch starts at 5 p.m. in Denmark daily and concludes with a report compiled at 7am, which is then circulated across government departments and concerned agencies detailing statements made and events that occurred.

The role is believed to have been established following the bilateral dispute involving Denmark and the US regarding Greenland this spring, when the US president threatened taking control of the resource-rich island.

Analysts note that this measure is among multiple instances of how Danish diplomacy and its government administration have had to adjust to the new reality of the Trump's current term.

An insider familiar with the foreign office stated, “It is fair to say that the situation in Greenland and the time zone gap between Denmark and the US were a significant reason introducing this system in the earlier months.”

Rather than everybody needing to promptly reach for their phones to catch up on news from the United States, the foreign office said it had made a coordinated approach to remain informed on Trump actions.

Jacob Kaarsbo, a ex- chief analyst at the defense intelligence service, stated that this development showed, “as long understood,” that the idea of the US as Denmark's largest and most important ally was no longer valid. “Partnerships are founded on common values and a mutual view of threats,” he added. “Trump lacks both of those with Denmark and I would argue he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
