Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy level established by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding healthy limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as the cold season sets in.

Yet recently, the newly elected city leadership appealed to the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Legal Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.

International Implications

The widespread use of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the city have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to 70% higher the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Various Pollution Contributors

The problem in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby states of farming communities.

Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Economic Toll

The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature mortalities each year in the city.
