Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, eclipsing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning often, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. He started playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the title match against the United States, he hit a game-tying homer in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
