Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe

There are numerous candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.

According to a new book, though, that title belongs to the automated timber mill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring for three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced in less than a week.”

Thanks to their speedy mechanical saw, that converted logs into planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial and artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.

The First Genuine Industrial Device

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary motion into vertical action for the saw. Another component changed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per cycle.

“Each element was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate them so they operated in a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every descending motion while advancing on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent use of fundamental components.”
