Accused Bondi Attackers Operated Alone and Did Not Undergo Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities Confirm.

The two suspected individuals responsible for the lethal incident at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, reportedly operated independently, per Australian law enforcement.

Investigators further stated that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans included landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The pair returned to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Planning During Stay

Police assert the pair did not receive any form of attack-related coaching or "planning" during their stay in the Philippines. Initial findings from Philippine authorities point to they "mostly stayed in" their hotel.

The attack—described as Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996—has been officially classified as a terrorist incident.

"Our teams are currently examining the footage," the commissioner stated, explaining that early assessments indicate that "the two men are alleged to have operated independently."

National law enforcement Commissioner Krissy Barrett briefed media on Tuesday that security camera video tracking the alleged gunmen's movements in the Philippines had been provided to Australian authorities.

"There is little to no indication to support the idea these accused individuals were affiliated with a broader organization, or were instructed by overseas entities to carry out an attack," the police chief emphasized.

However, the men were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines for tourism, the official added. She stressed that, given that the inquiry is ongoing, additional details may come to light.

Inspiration and Legal Charges

In prior statements, the nation's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked it appears both accused gunmen were "influenced by ISIS" extremist views.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—allegedly shot participants at the Hanukkah event.

Naveed Akram, who was hospitalised after the shooting, has been formally accused of 59 offences. These comprise 15 counts of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is scheduled to appear in court in April.

In the wake following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines reported that the father had entered the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an Australian passport.
